A Renaissance

For those of you who are still following my blog after all this time (or, for those of you who scroll down to see the date of my last post... eek!) you'll know that I've been quiet for a while. A little too quiet. What could be percolating in that brain of hers, you might ask? What grand scheme has been a-brewing over these past few months?

Here's my story, in a nutshell:

Writing is lovely. I will always be a writer. I will always be enchanted by the variety of words available in the English language, and the multitude of ways in which they can be assembled. However, when I embarked on my journey to become a published author, I didn't realize that I was using writing as a way to escape from a life that I knew in my heart of hearts just wasn't right for me...

I'll never say that my experience with the writing and publishing world was a bad one; I've learned more than I could have imagined over the past months, and met a whole host of truly wonderful, hard-working, awe-inspiring individuals (some of who you can read about here). But at this point in time, spending hours alone in front of a computer writing fiction after spending all day alone in front of the computer writing (mostly!) non-fiction isn't a recipe for my happiness and success.

So, that begs the question: what is the recipe for my happiness and success? It's a question I'm working on, but have yet to answer. I guess only time will tell.

Emma, I added you to my blogroll ages ago, and am glad to see you finally updated again. :) I can identify with your dilemma in my own way. I went to college when I was 26 and wound up majoring in creative writing because I knew that was all I ever wanted. I knew when I was ten years old that I wanted to spend the rest of my life writing. So after graduation I took a freelance writing job and often after spending my workday writing about things that have very little or no interest for me at all, I feel even less like writing fiction at the end of every day. I have to though, or I get horribly depressed. Whatever you decide, I hope that you continue to find time to do the writing that fulfills your soul.

I completely agree...I write nonfiction/journalistic stories all day m-f and when i get home I have very little drive to write fiction or poetry, but I would rather be writing fiction or poetry.

One has to give and I think it may be the former...writing nonfiction on topics that are not of interest to me is just not where I want to be. I love writing and want my writing to be recognized, but this is not the writing I want to be doing...

I wish you luck in whatever you decide.

Emma, I am so happy to 'see' you blogging again. I was worried about you. I hope you find that recipe for happiness soon - (I think the secret to personal happiness can sometimes appear in the most unexpected of places).

Emma, glad to see you posting again. The key to knowing when you might want to write fiction again is when a story or character is clamoring for your attention. Until then, slow and easy and enjoy what you are doing.

My previous job was as a writer/editor for a publishing company - and I couldn't bear being on the computer at night after writing behind one all day. Now, as an office manager, I don't spend all day at a computer and I'm writing for pleasure again. I also mix it up by writing long hand and using my Alphie so I'm not bound by a computer to be creative.
I hope you find what satisfies you.

Hope you'll come back again soon. Not necessarily to writing if that's not what you want to be doing. But come let us know what you have decided to do and how you're doing. We miss you.

Emma! I asked everyone what had happened to you and just discovered your new site by accident. You should have let your cyber friends know where you were. We were worried about you. (I'm putting your new site on my blog roll.)

Emma - Welcome Back, we missed you!

I'm sorry to hear you've been unhappy but most pleased to hear you are doing something about it. Do remember to enjoy the adventure - and ups and downs (which can contain much humor if you remember to look).

I also work in front of a computer all day and have little energy left at night. I fixed the problem by getting up earlier and writing in the morning. Now my writing gets the best part of my day instead of the dregs. It works for me, but I've never been into night life, so don't care if I'm in bed at 9 when others are just beginning their evening.

Best to you,

Char

Wow. I finally decide to come here to see if you still exist -- after many tweets to you asking if you still exist -- and I find you posted something new -- but waaaay back in March.

You'll come back to writing. You have it in you.
